Lockdown Laps to Marathon Miles – A Journey Rediscovered

My First 25K: Mid-December Challenge

As mid-December approached, I faced one of my biggest running challenges yet: my first 25K run. This milestone marked a critical point in my marathon training journey and was the longest distance I had attempted before the Christmas break.

The Preparation

Weeks of preparation led up to this day. My routine was a blend of running, cycling, badminton, and football. With each passing week, my mileage increased, pushing my limits further. The advice from friends and fellow runners had been invaluable, guiding me through my training. Yet, despite my readiness, a hint of nervousness lingered.

The Day of the Run

December mornings can be brutally cold, and this day was no exception. I woke up early, eager yet apprehensive. My gear was ready – hydration pack filled, energy gels in place. As I stepped outside, the cold air hit me, but I embraced it, knowing this run was a crucial part of my journey.

The first few kilometers felt like a breeze. The rhythm of my footsteps on the pavement and the crisp air invigorated me. I maintained a steady pace, cautious not to expend too much energy too soon. The route was a mix of familiar urban roads and uncharted park trails, adding an element of adventure to the run.

Mid-Run Challenges

By the time I hit the 10K mark, I felt strong and confident. However, as I approached 15K, the real challenge began. My legs grew heavier, and the cold seemed to seep deeper into my muscles. I took my first gel, hoping it would provide the necessary boost. This was the point where mental and physical challenges met head-on.

At 20K, a wave of familiarity washed over me as I recognized the roads. Initially, my plan was to complete 22K, but feeling good, I thought, “Why not push a bit further?” Deciding to aim for 25K, or even 30K if possible, felt both ambitious and exhilarating.

The Final Stretch

The last 5K was a mix of familiar paths and sheer determination. As I neared my usual park, the pain in my legs, especially my knee, became more pronounced. Despite the discomfort, I pushed forward, easing my pace but keeping my eyes on the goal. The park, a place of many past runs, now represented the final leg of this challenge.

In the last stretches of the run, doubts crept in. How was I going to complete a marathon if I struggled to finish 25K? My earlier optimism about possibly hitting 30K seemed far-fetched now. Each step was a battle against both physical pain and mental fatigue. But I knew I had to finish.

The thought of completing kept me going. The goal was not speed but completion. Each step brought a mix of exhaustion and determination. Crossing the finish line, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and pride. I had done it – my first 25K.

Reflection

This run was more than a physical challenge; it was a lesson in mental resilience. It taught me the importance of pushing through discomfort and trusting the process. The preparation had paid off, and with this run behind me, I felt a renewed sense of confidence. The Christmas break would be a time to rest and reflect, and then, with renewed vigor, I planned to sign up with New Levels Coaching for structured training after the holidays.
