Lockdown Laps to Marathon Miles – A Journey Rediscovered

Choosing the Right Marathon Training Plan: My Journey and Lessons Learned

When I began considering a marathon training plan, I found myself doubting my ability to see it through. Despite completing three half marathons, my confidence wavered. This journey started in September and October when I realized I needed a structured plan to prepare for the marathon.

The Initial Struggle

A friend who had completed marathons before gave me a training plan. It seemed daunting, involving much more running than I was used to. Feeling overwhelmed, I did my own research and found a site called Bark. There, I discovered a highly-reviewed coach nearby and decided to reach out.

The First Coaching Experience

I submitted a request and quickly received a reply. We started conversing, and the coach requested a call. During our conversation, I shared my running background, including my three half marathons and the disastrous one where I ran while sick. The coach scolded me for running in such a condition and advised that my weekly activities, which included badminton and football, could derail my marathon training. The coach’s rigid approach did not instill confidence, leaving me uneasy about making the necessary sacrifices.

Finding the Right Fit

Remembering that another running friend had positive experiences with a different coaching team, I decided to contact New Levels Coaching. I had a friendly chat with Lewis, who immediately reassured me about their programs and approach. Mentioning my friend who recommended New Levels, Lewis remembered him and praised his running skills, which made me feel more at ease.

The Training Programs

Lewis explained the two main options available:

  1. Training Programs:
    • Entry-level coaching options offering access to high-level coaching at a competitive price.
    • Pay upfront based on the selected timeframe.
    • Includes 1:1 coach support, full access to the Final Surge App, weekly coach feedback, and more.
  2. Monthly Coaching Packages:
    • Mid-level and premium options available as monthly or 6-month subscriptions.
    • Includes 1:1 coach support, full access to the Final Surge App, regular coach feedback, monthly review calls, and more.

At this point, my weekly schedule included two badminton sessions, two football sessions, one cycling session, and two running sessions. Despite feeling some knee pain, I felt ready to commit.

Making the Decision

Lewis’s flexible and understanding approach was exactly what I needed. He acknowledged the necessity of some sacrifices but didn’t insist on completely cutting out my other activities. This balance reassured me and motivated me to follow through with the training plan. I decided to sign up with New Levels Coaching, where I would be allocated a coach within their team of experienced professionals.

Starting the Training Plan

With my plan in place, I felt energized to begin my marathon training. The next decision was whether to start the 16-week or the 12-week course. Confident in my previous achievements, I thought I didn’t need the full 16 weeks. How wrong I was.

Reflection

Choosing the right marathon training plan and coaching team is crucial. It’s not just about finding someone with good reviews or a plan that looks effective on paper. It’s about finding a team that understands your needs, supports your goals, and keeps you motivated. This experience taught me the importance of trusting my instincts and seeking a supportive environment.
