Lockdown Laps to Marathon Miles – A Journey Rediscovered

How a challenge became a calling

The First Step: How a Challenge Became My Calling

Have you ever caught yourself crafting the perfect excuse? Too tired, the weather’s bad, the shoes don’t fit—sound familiar? That was me, the king of excuses, comfortably nested on my couch.

Then came a pivotal moment in 2020, led by the most unexpected coach—my incredible wife. With unwavering determination, she faced my wall of excuses one evening and shattered it. “Enough with the excuses,” she said. “It’s time to get moving!” This wasn’t just a suggestion; it was the nudge that transformed my life. Have you ever had that kind of wake-up call that changed everything?

This simple yet powerful challenge didn’t just get me off the couch; it steered me toward what would become the most transformative journey of my life. Every step since then has not just been about covering distance but about discovering strength I never knew I had.

So, what about you? Have you ever turned a seemingly small challenge into a life-altering adventure? Let’s share and inspire each other to take those first crucial steps toward our goals.

The first challenge was to get my first pair of running shoes, which I had no idea I had a few friends who had run a few marathons before to get advice of a starter shoe, not knowing anything about my running style.

The second challenge proved even more daunting: actually running. Early on, I decided to venture out only when the weather seemed perfect, which was my novice way of setting the stage for success. However, even under ideal conditions, the reality of running hit me hard.

Each attempt to run felt like a battle. I was out of breath almost immediately, coughing and spluttering as if my body was in open rebellion against what I was asking it to do. Bent over, hands on my knees, I looked more like I was gasping for survival rather than engaging in healthy exercise. It was humbling, to say the least.

Despite these rough starts, there was a part of me that was determined not to let these setbacks define my running journey. With each panting breath, I learned a bit more about my limits and how far I could push them. It wasn’t pretty, but it was progress, and each small victory made the next step a little easier.
